During the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (S), he accommodated everyone in the community whether they were male, female, Arab, non-Arab, and also those that were disabled, and that included inclusiveness in the masjid. A blind companion would be the second muezzin behind Belal. People with Disabilities were encouraged to go to the masjid  and were told to not use their disability as an excuse. Does your masjid feel like it is accommodating to the special needs community?

About MUHSEN’s Masjid Certification Program

MUHSEN seal indicating that a masjid is certified Platinum in terms of awareness, accommodation, and acceptance.

MUHSEN believes that there is a place where where everyone should feel accepted, comfortable, and welcomed. MUHSEN has created a comprehensive, 3 tiered checklist that lists the various ways that a masjid can be accommodating to special needs individuals and their families.

By contributing towards developing and establishing a variety of different supports and accommodations for everyone within the Masjid setting including Support Groups, Eid Prayer supports and continued Educational Events, masjids will work towards becoming nationally recognized as a masjid that is inclusive and special needs friendly environment and joining a community of over 50 other masjids across North America.

Why Masjid Certification Matters

When the Prophet (S) frowned at the blind companion Abdullah ibn Umm-Maktum, Allah was the one that corrected his behavior and the Prophet Muhammad after that moment always made sure to make this companion feel important and valued in the community. With this in mind, the Masjid certification assists in the destigmatization of the congregation on special needs.

Through aiding in bringing communities together and facilitating the approach that all deserve to feel and be welcomed, we are able to service the Ummah at large. In hindsight, the reason that masjid certification matters is it brings compassion to a community, and allows the removal of barriers on the Day of Judgement for us, as the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad mentions, “Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his needs in this world and the Hereafter.”
